Escaping Darkness Book Review

escaping darkness

Escaping Darkness

She may have spent years in an asylum, but that didn’t make her crazy–just fearless.

Dropped in Moscow with her friends on an impossible mission against underworld forces, Tara is left to her feelings of overwhelming inadequacy. Her boyfriend is a healer, her best friend is “the Guardian,” and everyone else is a powerhouse of awesome strengths. The only thing she has been able to contribute are her memories, which has left her with nightmares of her time spent at the mercy of the evil Sarian–who everyone has gone to fight.

Alone with her emotions, Tara finds herself falling into a city of depravity and corruption. And amidst all this evil is a young man with an agenda of his own, who leads her down a road that will either prove she is a hero at heart, or drag her into a world she’s always feared.

He wants revenge, she wants redemption. And in an underground rings of missing girls and bloody sacrifices, only the fearless can survive…

My Opinion
Wow what a great book! I loved almost everything about it. I didn't like the parts where there was drugs but that's because I am really against drugs and I knew what to expect so that doesn't change my opinion on the story. I loved Tara because even after all that happened to her she is still a kind loving person. Her nightmares/memories were so scary and I felt so bad for her. She felt that she didn't deserve her boyfriend Peter because she wasn't good enough for him. But Peter loves her just the way she is and is there for her whenever she needs. Who wouldn't want somewhere like Peter? I know I would! They are a great couple. I know how great a book is when I fall in love with the characters. I do feel like I want to know what happened before this story so I think I have to go back and read The Stone Guardian now. I'm not 100% sure since I haven't read it yet but I think The Stone Guardian is in Ashley's (which is Tara's best friend) point of view. I can't wait to read it!

Author Theresa McClinton
A long time enthusiast of things that go bump in the night, Theresa started her writing career as a journalism intern—possibly the least creative writing field out there. After her first semester at a local newspaper, she washed her hands of press releases and features articles to delve into the whimsical world of young adult paranormal romance.

Since then, Theresa has gotten married, had three terrific kids, moved to central Ohio, and was repeatedly guilt tripped into adopting a menagerie of animals that are now members of the family. But don’t be fooled by her domesticated appearance. Her greatest love is travel. Having stepped foot on the soil of over a dozen countries, traveled to sixteen U.S. states—including an extended seven-year stay in Kodiak, Alaska—she is anything but settled down. But wherever life brings her, she will continue to weave tales of adventure and love with the hope her stories will bring joy and inspiration to her readers.

The Stone Guardian

When myth becomes reality, reality becomes a nightmare.
Like any other teenager in America, Ashley just wants a normal life. But growing up in an orphanage for the insane is anything but normal. After endless therapy and increasing medication, her nightmares have only gotten worse.

Probably because they’re not nightmares.

When Ashley’s mysteriously abducted, she finds a reality even less normal than the orphanage. And she discovers something else—she’s no ordinary orphan. Faced with enemies thought to only exist in fairy tales, Ashley discovers she possesses a powerful Maya bloodline. She’s the daughter of an ancient Maya Guardian, whose duty is to protect the Stone of Muuk’ich, an enchanted relic blessed by the gods. But first she must get it back from Sarian, a power-hungry demigod who slaughtered the last guardian—Ashley’s mother. Without the stone, all will be lost.

When she meets Arwan, a hot Belizean time bender, his delicious olive skin and dark eyes make her feel a little less alone. But his gentle whispers and reassuring touch might not be all they seem. How can she balance love and duty when it’s up to her to prevent the rising of the underworld? Especially when the guy she loves might be its crown prince…

The Chemistry of Fate Book Review

The Chemistry of Fate
by Meradeth Houston

Book Description

“They are everywhere, can be anyone, and are always the last person you’d expect.” When Tom stumbles across his grandfather’s journal, he’s convinced the old man was crazier than he thought. The book contains references to beings called the Sary, immortals who are assigned to save humans on the verge of suicide. They certainly aren’t allowed to fall in love with mortals. Which the journal claims Tom’s grandfather did, resulting in his expulsion from the Sary. As strange as the journal seems, Tom can’t get the stories out of his head; especially when he finds the photo of his grandfather’s wings.

Tom’s only distraction is Ari, the girl he studies with for their chemistry class.

Ari has one goal when she arrives in town: see how much Tom knows about the Sary and neutralize the situation. This isn’t a normal job, but protecting the secrecy of the Sary is vital. If Tom is a threat to exposing the Sary to the public, fate has a way of taking care of the situation, usually ending with the mortal’s death. While Ari spends time with Tom, he becomes more than just an assignment, but how far can a relationship go when she can’t tell him who she really is? When she finds out just how much Tom actually knows about the Sary, Ari is forced to choose between her wings, and her heart.

THE CHEMISTRY OF FATE is a companion to COLORS LIKE MEMORIES and is set before the latter takes place.

My Opinion
This is the first book I have read from Meradeth Houston. If Colors Like Memories is anything like The Chemistry of Fate then I am sure I will love it. Ari is a Sary sent on an assignment to find out what Tom knows about the Sary. As they get to know each other and spending more time together they start to fall in love. The more Ari finds out what Tom knows the more she feels like she has to protect him but instead things start going very wrong for both of them. I really liked that Tom and Ari's relationship was not wild and crazy it seemed more sweet and innocent. Every chapter switches from Tom to Ari's point of view so you know how they both feel. It is a very beautiful and romantic story.

To learn more about the book or the author or to buy the book go to this post. There is also a giveaway that will end in a few hours so hurry go enter! The book is $2.99 right now! And one last thing I just wanted to say thanks to Meradeth for the ebook copy I received for this review.

The Death of Anyone by D.J. Swykert

The Death of Anyone
by D.J. Swykert

Book Description
Detroit homicide Detective Bonnie Benham has been transferred from narcotics for using more than arresting and is working the case of the killer of adolescent girls. CSI collects DNA evidence from the scene of the latest victim, which has not been detected on the other victims. But no suspect turns up in the FBI database. Due to the notoriety of the crimes a task force is put together with Bonnie as the lead detective, and she implores the D.A. to authorize an as yet unapproved type of a DNA Search in an effort to identify the killer. Homicide Detective Neil Jensen, with his own history of drug and alcohol problems, understands Bonnie’s frailty and the two detectives become inseparable as they track this killer of children.

Guest Post

The underlying theme in my latest book, The Death of Anyone, poses the Machiavellian question: Does the end justify the means? I developed this story around an impulsive homicide detective, Bonnie Benham, who wants to use Familial DNA, a search technique not in common use in the United States. Only two states even have a written policy regarding its use, Colorado and California. Many legal analysts believe it violates Fourth Amendment rights which guard against unreasonable searches and seizures.

Bonnie is a no nonsense cop who describes herself as a blond with a badge and a gun. She has her own answer to the ethical use of Familial DNA, but the actual legality of its use will be determined in a real life courtroom in the California trial of a serial killer dubbed by the media: The Grim Sleeper.

Lonnie David Franklin, the Grim Sleeper, was caught because his son’s DNA was the closest match to DNA collected at the crime scenes in the database. Investigating Franklin’s son led them to investigate Lonnie Franklin. But there was no direct DNA evidence that linked Lonnie to the crime scene until they obtained a sample from him after his arrest. Lonnie Franklin will be the first person in the U.S. to ever stand trial based on Familial DNA evidence, and its admissibility issues in court will be thoroughly tested by defense attorneys. These are the very same issues that face Detroit Homicide Detective Bonnie Benham and form the plot of my story.

I’m a blue collar person from Detroit. I’ve worked as a truck driver, dispatcher, logistics analyst, operations manager, and ten years as a 911 operator, which was the very best job of them all. I have a pretty straight forward style of telling a story. I write a book like you’d watch a movie and put it down on paper.

Homicide Detective Neil Jensen, with his own history of drug and alcohol problems understands Bonnie's frailty and the two detectives become inseparable as they track this killer of children.

I first heard about the use of Familial DNA working as a 911 operator in 2006. It came up in a conversation with officers working a case. I thought at the time it would make an interesting premise for a book. I began writing the mystery some three years later after leaving the department. I had just finished editing a first draft of The Death of Anyone in the summer 2010 when news of The Grim Sleeper’s capture in Los Angeles was released. I read with interest all the information pouring out of L.A. regarding the investigation and the problems confronting prosecutors. All of which are explored in The Death of Anyone.

Romance of Grace Book Review

The Romance of Grace
by Jim McNeely III

Book Description
What if God sees us the way a man sees a woman he is infatuated with, and His main question is not how to make us moral but rather how to get us to fall in love with Him? In The Romance of Grace, Jim McNeely explores Bible passages that tell us what God really wants for us and what His love means. This is the love of a God who chose to give His life for ours, even carefully retaining His scars into the throne room of heaven and telling us in His very body, "I have gone to great lengths and great costs to say that I forsook all comforts for the love of you." Join Jim in his exploration of life in God's unconditional, redeeming, amazing grace.

My Opinion
First of all I want to start off by saying that I don't consider myself religious but I do believe in God. What I loved the most about this book is that it was about God but not about any specific religion. This is a beautiful and inspiring book.I learned so much from it and agreed with a lot of what the author said. This book explains how God loves us and wants us to love him back but not by forcing us but because we choose to. I loved that the author kept making the point that grace is not about our love for God but God's love for us "In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 1 John 4:10". Grace is God's love for us. Not because we deserve it but because he chooses to bless us. I was reminded that even though I am a sinner God loves me just the way I am and all I have to do is accept God's love and grace. I loved it and recommend this book to everyone!

Characters In Search Of A Novel Guest Post

Hats Off to Jane Austen

by Molly D Campbell

As a writer myself, I am amazed at all the books that are now being published every single day by independent authors. These books are all over Amazon! It is now so easy for any old Tom, Dick, or Emily Bronte to cook up a novel on their laptops, do a little editing, and PRESTO, hit the publish button!

Of course, not many of us Independent authors achieve the success of that lady who wrote Fifty Shades of Grey. But we continue to sit in our pajamas in front of our computer screens, typing away with high hopes and the Oxford Comma.

But as I dusted my bookshelves this morning, I came across my dog-eared copy of Mansfield Park. That Jane Austen—what a genius. And then I started to imagine what her writing life must have been like. Good heavens.

First of all, I am sure that in order to get ready to scribe one of her novels, she had to stock up on foolscap, or vellum, or whatever they called paper back then. She would need reams of the stuff. And quills. Ink. Blotters. The supplies alone would take up an entire cupboard, I am sure.

Then Jane would sit down at her desk and begin to write. I write in either pajamas or sweat pants, with bedroom slippers and a cup of coffee. Jane would be trussed up in a corset, surrounded by pantaloons and petticoats, topped off with a gown. Getting dressed must have taken at least 45 minutes. I am usually completely done writing for the day after 45 minutes. Good grief.

Then Jane would sit down and begin scratching out the words, repeatedly dipping her quill into an inkwell. There would be blots all over the place. I am sure she got ink on her dresses. And all over her fingers. Really, if writing were this messy today, I just wouldn’t want to bother. I have my manicure to think of.

Editing? I just hit “copy,” “cut,” and “paste.” Easy-peasy. Jane had to cross things out and rewrite them. I bet she had to add pages and rip others up. Just think of the huge stack of inky vellum that she had to deal with. Not to mention worrying about what would happen if the wind blew, scattering her foolscap to the winds. Numbering the pages wouldn’t be a solution to this kind of catastrophe. It boggles my mind.

Back in the days of Jane, Emily B, and all of their writing friends, it took huge commitment and intestinal fortitude to be a writer. And just think of this: after they finished a book, they had to copy it over in longhand in order to submit a readable final draft to their publishers. This must have taken years and years. No wonder Jane never got married. She just didn’t have the time.

These days, writers have loads of time. Because of technology, we can write books, answer emails, vacuum, put a chicken in the crock pot, change some diapers, and compose brilliant tweets all in the same day.

If Jane were alive, I bet she would have a husband, ten books on the New York Times best seller list, 400,00 Twitter followers, and a social media manager. And she would probably have time to play Words With Friends. She would have her own hashtag, I am sure. #everysavagecandance. It gives me pause, and I am humbled by her dedication and genius. But then I have to write a chapter, check my Facebook page, and sort some socks.

Broken Build Review and Giveaway

Broken Build
by Rachelle Ayala

Jen Jones hides a horrible secret behind her new degree, toned body, and exciting job at Silicon Valley’s hottest startup—until a man linked to her past is killed in a hit-and-run.

CEO and founder Dave Jewell is about to land a huge deal. He doesn't need blood on his car, threatening phone calls, and Jen wrapped in broken code and blackmail.

A gang of thugs hunts Jen, and she takes refuge in Dave’s protective arms. Together, they must thwart a killer and rescue an innocent victim from their past. Love blossoms, but a damaging revelation points straight at Jen, threatening to tear them apart forever.

Content advisory: language, sexual situations

My Opinion
I really enjoyed Jen and Dave's story. To me the main idea of this story seemed to be about love trust and forgiveness. Jen had to learn to forgive herself for her past mistakes and Dave had to love her enough to trust her and accept her even though her mistakes had caused a lot of pain in his life. I was very surprised to learn how all the characters in this book were connected. Some things in the story were easy to figure out and others I did not expect at all! The book seemed a little to long but I really loved the ending.

The Trouble With Toads Book Blast and Giveaway ends 6/10

trouble with toads
The Trouble with Toads

Once upon a time a young girl wanted revenge. But first, she wanted to be beautiful.

Twelve-year-old Bettony has read enough stories that begin with ‘Once upon a time’ to know what happens to the ugly stepsisters at the end, and she’s determined to escape that fate by any means necessary—even by magic.

Unfortunately, when it comes to magic, there is no place for regret, refunds, or exchanges. Even if you accidentally turn your older sister into a toad.

If Bettony wants her Happily Ever After to end well, she’s going to have to find a way to turn her sister back into a person before their mother finds out she’s been dabbling with magic and grounds her for life.

Tracking down the family magic turns out to be surprisingly easy. Now, if only it came with directions . . .

THE TROUBLE WITH TOADS (45,000 words) is the first book in a new upper MG series The Secret Stepsister Society. The second book will be released Summer 2013.

danyelleAuthor Danyelle Leafty

Danyelle Leafty writes upper MG and YA fantasy, and is the author of THE FAIRY GODMOTHER DILEMMA series. Danyelle has always loved fairy tales, and prefers stories where someone gets eaten, or at the very least, transmogrified. Much of her inspiration has come from fairy tales, because as G.K. Chesterton so aptly states, "Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten."

In her spare time, she collects dragons, talking frogs, and fairy godmothers. She also collects books, and one day hopes to make a house out of them. She enjoys learning languages, fiddling with her harp, and perfecting the fine art of mothering. (It's a lot like trying to herd chickens during a lightning storm while a goat stampede is going on.)

One of her heroes is Albert Einstein, particularly for the following quote: "Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The most important thing is not to stop questioning."

GOD BLESS EVERYONE WHO HAS SUPPORTED THE CAUSE TO SAVE SEA TURTLES FROM EXTINCTION!

I've
always believed that magic hides in special places. As a child, people
would often stare at my bright red hair, which was very, very bright
indeed.
Unfortunately, I developed a bad habit of making up rhymes
about all of them, and they soon became funny characters. I didn't have
much time to think about being different; fanciful lyricisms danced in
my head, and no one was safe!
Since then, I've come to believe that
storytelling has the power to inspire a deep love of language and
learning. Words tripping off the tongue in somersaults that stick to
your thoughts like taffy-- those are the things that stay forever in the
mind.
I've lived in many special places: on a farm, in a city
skyscraper, on a tropical beach, and in the beautiful country of France.
Now I live in northern California, between the redwood forests and the
sea. Even though I'm an adult, I'm still as silly as ever.
Many nice
words have been used to describe my books, such as fun, engaging,
delightful, and whimsical. Some folks say that I deliver timeless
messages of love for kids and parents to share again and again; this
makes me very happy. I hope that you'll enjoy my stories, too.
Captivating children with language is something that I believe in, and I
strive to live my life with this always.

Yours Affectionately, Jane Austen Book Blast and Giveaway ends 6/6

Yours Affectionately, Jane Austen
Was Mr. Darcy real? Is time travel really possible? For pragmatic Manhattan artist Eliza Knight the answer to both questions is absolutely, Yes! And Fitzwilliam Darcy of Pemberley Farms, Virginia is the reason why!
His tale of love and romance in Regency England leaves Eliza in no doubt that Fitz Darcy is the embodiment of Jane Austen’s legendary hero. And she’s falling in love with him. But can the man who loved the inimitable Jane Austen ever love average, ordinary Eliza Knight?
Eliza’s doubts grow, perhaps out of proportion, when things start to happen in the quiet hamlet of Chawton, England; events that could change everything. Will the beloved author become the wedge that divides Fitz and Eliza or the tie that binds them?

Praise for Yours Affectionately, Jane Austen

O’Rourke creates a world that defies cynicism and demands suspension of disbelief – even in this age of doubt and hyper-realism. Sheer escapism at its best. Clever, charming and affectionate.

~Jocelyn Bury
…the reader must tenaciously read on rather than put the book down to satisfy their hunger for the story to resolve, which it does in characteristically Jane Austen fashion.

~Erin Murdock

In Yours Affectionately, Jane Austen, author Sally Smith O’Rourke creates a compelling story that investigates what and who might have inspired Jane Austen. While the story line is certainly far-fetched, it is a truly unique idea, one that captivated this reader until the very last page.

~Meg Massey

A magical tale about a little girl called Jade who stays up to meet the Tooth Fairy and goes to fairyland with her. She is also in for a pleasant surprise when she finds out what happens to all the teeth the Tooth Fairy takes!

I loved reading Jade and the Tooth Fairy. What I loved most about it was that it takes you to a magical world of fairies and explains what happens to children's teeth once the Tooth Fairy takes them. My 5 year old daughter has started asking me questions about the Tooth Fairy so I think it was perfect timing to have a chance to read and review this book. Since it is a children's book I'll let my daughter give her opinion of the book in a mini interview/review.

Me: What did you think of the book?
Melody: I liked it alot!
Me: What did you think of the pictures?
Melody: They were pretty.
Me: What was your favorite part of the story?
Melody: The Fairy because she was very pretty.
Me: Did you learn anything from the story?
Melody: Yes I learned... (well I don't really want to put her answer to this question because you'll just have to read and see what the Tooth Fairy does with the teeth!)

So you see we both loved this book. I was really surprised to find out what happens to the teeth but it was a really great surprise. Also the ending to this story makes me wonder if Jade will be going on any more adventures. I sure hope so because I would love to read more of Jade's magical adventures!

Melody is 5!

Just wanted to share that my oldest turned 5 years old on May 12! We had a Strawberry Shortcake themed party. My sister made her the outfit and the cake. It was a small party but she had so much fun!

The Harvest (Sci-fi Thriller) Review

The Harvest
by Clint Morey

In a future where mutants are bred for their body parts, Steph Martin is a defect. Not up to transplant standards, she's been assigned the job of preparing other mutants for their glorious gift of life to the humans.

Cody Rodgers is also defective, but he's human so few notice. A Deputy Sheriff, he has little love for mutants but is very attracted to Steph, until he finds out she's not human.

When the mutants break free from the harvesting farm, they attack the town where the extractions take place. People are unable to differentiate between humans and mutants and the town quickly becomes a killing field.

When the government decides it must destroy the entire town to prevent mutants from infiltrating society at large, Cody and Steph must learn to work together if there is any hope of stopping the killing.

My Opinion
I really enjoyed reading this story. From the very beginning it starts out with some action with a mutant boy having his organs taken out so that humans can have a transplant. When a mutant decides he wants freedom and escapes things start getting real crazy. This book reminded me of movies like Resident Evil and thought it would make a great movie too someday. There is a lot of killing though so if that bothers you then I would not recommend this book. But if you are like me and love all types of books then I can tell you that you will not be bored with this book!
